SUMMARY:VineBalance 2022 Virtual Workshop Series: Climate Resiliency
DESCRIPTION:Join Chris Serra\, a leading expert in sustainable winegrowing certification\, as we workshop a selection of new objectives introduced in the VineBalance 2022 update. Growers are invited to practice scoring their vineyard operations anonymously and ask questions as we move through key action items in the Ecosystem Health\, Climate Resiliency\, and Social Equity chapters of the latest version of the VineBalance workbook. \nClick the Session Title Below to Register! \nEcosystem Health – Tuesday\, November 30th from 4:00 to 5:30pm \nSustainable farming is a holistic approach that acknowledges the interconnection between agriculture and natural ecosystems. Encouraging a healthy ecosystem in and around the vineyard is essential to soil health\, biodiversity\, and pollinator habitat. \nClimate Resiliency – Tuesday\, December 7th from 4:00 to 5:30pm \nClimate resiliency involves a set of practices and capacities that are known to help withstand climate change at the farm level through carbon sequestration\, adaptation\, and risk mitigation. It is important for growers to understand the science of climate change and build resiliency measures into their environmental\, social\, and economic management strategies. \nSocial Equity – Tuesday\, December 14th from 4:00 to 5:30pm \nSocial equity addresses the “people” component of the so-called Three P’s of Sustainability: people\, planet\, and prosperity. This can be achieved through thoughtful human resource management\, employee benefits\, and worker health and safety measures. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nChris Serra began his career in the wine industry working in the tasting room of Pennsylvania’s Chaddsford Winery in 2006. After a visit to Portland\, he made the cross-country move and found a home at the Carlton Winemakers Studio where he helped build its consumer-facing sustainability presence. In 2007\, Serra was hired as the LIVE Executive Director\, where he was tasked with developing a winery certification program and expanding the organizational footprint into new regions in the Pacific Northwest. He has since overseen thirteen years of membership growth (except for 2020’s COVID-related contraction)\, and expansion into Washington and Idaho. He has acted as a sustainability ambassador to emerging wine regions and has been invited to speak on numerous occasions as a representative of the pioneering LIVE certification schemes. Serra holds a BA from the University of Delaware\, and an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

DESCRIPTION:Terraview provides a cloud-based platform that combines viticulture knowledge with machine learning and artificial intelligence.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJoin PhillIp Garrison\, Terraview’s Regional Manager for North and South America\, for an overview of this cloud-based platform that combines viticulture knowledge with machine learning and artificial intelligence to produce a self-learning\, easy-to-use and intuitive operating system\, exclusive for vineyards. Terraview’s operating system and its companion app\, Vine Click\, assist viticulturists in their decision-making\, to better predict harvest yields\, future disease/fungi impacts\, more smartly manage irrigation and more efficiently manage work at the vineyard. \nThis session will give a brief history of how Terraview came to be\, along with a demo of the platform itself. \n? Click Here to Register\n\n\nAbout our Presenter: Born and raised in South America\, Philip moved to the United States to study Economics at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. For 6 years he worked at several branches of a multinational logistics company\, leading the commercial effort for transportation of project cargo\, soft commodities and base metals\, and becoming the youngest branch general manager in the company. At age 30 he joined the wine industry as the general manager of a wine store in mid town Manhattan. A new passion was born. After tasting a few thousand wines and taking a variety of wine courses\, most notably WSET’s Advanced Level 3\, he decided that a retail store was too confining. He opened his own import company\, created an impressive portfolio of boutique wineries from South America\, trained a sales team for NYC and established a network of 15 distributors throughout the country. After 7 very successful years\, changing market conditions led him to seek cooperation with larger wholesalers\, resulting in 7 more years of of wine sales in different roles ranging from wine consultant to regional manager to national sales manager.\nPhilip now joins Terraview with the excitement and motivation of bringing an innovative solution to the viticulturists and winemakers that are the cornerstone of an industry that has given him so much.

DESCRIPTION:There are gifts and then there are corporate gifts. What’s the difference? Reach! Chances are when companies purchase gifting options\, these gifts will be distributed to over ten recipients in one pop. It’s the difference between tin cans & string and a megaphone. \nHaving a corporate gifting program for the holidays (and perhaps all year round) is a great way to connect with more consumers on an exponential level. To ensure success\, it’s important to think through the details and plan early. \nCompanies give gifts to enhance their relationships and stay ‘top of mind’ with their clients. What better way to build a lasting\, valued relationship than through a gift of wine from New York? It is also good business. SUMMARY:Fireside Chat with Sam Filler & Guests
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion about the lessons learned from the exciting Lodi “Modern Farmer Series” and how we can use them in New York.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nOne of the most popular sessions at this year’s B.E.V. NY conference was “Telling Your Grower Story\,” brought to you directly by Lodi Winegrower’s Dr. Stephanie Bolton. Today we welcome her back\, along with Mike Colizzi\, NYWGF Board Member\, Owner of Kashong Glen Vineyards and Technician at Cornell University in the Grape Breeding and Genetics Program\, for a discussion about how we might take the lessons learned in the Lodi “Modern Farmer Series\,” and apply them here. For those who participated in our Grower Survey recently\, NYWGF values the information on the grapes you grow. While there’s still a long way to go\, correct data is just the beginning to telling our story and selling more grapes. Join us for a candid conversation about where the grower community is heading\, what we need to do to get there\, and how NWYGF and our partners can help! \nWhy the Fireside Chat? We are eager to see you all in person soon\, but for now we invite you to join us online to have the discussions we might have had in your offices or your tasting rooms. We look forward to talking about issues affecting your businesses and our community. Let’s share ways we can help each other and ways the New York Wine & Grape Foundation can continue to best serve you. \nWe invite you to join in – perhaps with a glass of your favorite New York wine – and ask questions during this informal but informational online chat. \nClick Here to Register \n\n\nStephanie Bolton leads the Grower Research\, Education\, & Communications initiatives for the Lodi Winegrape Commission\, along with the LODI RULES program. Bolton provides targeted and daily support to Lodi winegrape growers in the areas of advanced grower education and outreach\, marketing and promotions of the region’s diverse winegrapes\, and – most notably – viticultural research and sustainability programming\, including Lodi’s world-renowned LODI RULES sustainable winegrowing certification program. The Lodi AVA (CA Crush District 11) contains over 100\,000 acres of grapevines\, with a unique profile where new vineyard plantings exist alongside century-old vines\, soil types range from sandy loam to volcanic terrain\, and just about every trellising system invented is being used.

SUMMARY:VineBalance RFP Information Session
DESCRIPTION:The New York Wine and Grape Foundation seeks a consultant to update VineBalance as the basis for a new sustainability certification program for the New York grape and wine industry. To support this process\, we will be holding an online information session on June 16\, 2021 at 1pm/EDT. \nClick Here to Register \nBackground: \nNYWGF is developing a third-party certification for sustainably farmed grapes and wine. The basis for this certification will be the VineBalance Guide to Sustainable Viticulture\, a grower self-assessment workbook codeveloped by the Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Soil and Water Conservation Committee of the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets in 2007. This workbook has been widely applied across the state\, but it lacks a system of third-party verification and logo for special labeling. A pilot program for Yates County grape growers will begin in 2022 with the intent to expand statewide. The program will serve winegrowers who cultivate V. vinifera\, V. labrusca\, and hybrid grape varieties. Growers who achieve certification will be permitted to use the logo for direct-to-consumer marketing. This market-based approach will provide a continuous incentive for value-added producers to purchase sustainably farmed grapes and increase the visibility of sustainable wines in the marketplace. \nThe purpose of the RFP is to provide high level strategic and structural recommendations for certification design based on sustainability best practices\, while balancing the small-scale and independent nature of New York’s wine industry. The ideal candidate will be experienced in East Coast climate and agriculture\, viticulture and enology\, international standards of sustainable winegrowing\, and environmental certifications deployed by other agricultural industries. The VineBalance RFP is available here and responses are due by June 30\, 2021.

SUMMARY:Fireside Chat with Sam Filler & Guests
DESCRIPTION:Will New York Wine Tourism be the “Comeback Kid?” Preparing for upcoming tourism season and lessons learned during the pandemic year.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor many wineries the 2020 Summer and Fall tourism season was the best they’ve ever seen. Was this Covid-related “blip” on the radar just that – a one time occurrence? How are wineries\, and their wine trail marketing partners\, making the most of the experience they gained last year to improve this year’s tourism season? Join wine trail leaders and members from across the state as they share details about how the year went. What is the expectation for this coming tourism season? What adaptations for wineries (and wine trails themselves) were successful and will remain\, and which will not? What support do wineries and wine trail marketers need from the NYWGF? \nWhy the Fireside Chat? We are eager to see you all in person soon\, but for now we invite you to join us online to have the discussions we might have had in your offices or your tasting rooms. We look forward to talking about issues affecting your businesses and our community. Let’s share ways we can help each other and ways the New York Wine & Grape Foundation can continue to best serve you. \nWe invite you to join in – perhaps with a glass of your favorite New York wine – and ask questions during this informal but informational online chat. \n\nClick Here to Register
