SUMMARY:Fighting Downy Mildew in Grapes with Titanium Dioxide and Crop Diseases with UV-C Light
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, May 20\, 2026\n9:00 – 10:00 AM\nAs disease pressure continues to challenge vineyards and specialty crop growers\, emerging technologies are offering new ways to manage pathogens while reducing reliance on traditional fungicides. This webinar explores how titanium dioxide (TiO₂) and ultraviolet (UV) light\, including UV-C\, can be used as innovative tools to control grape downy mildew and other crop diseases. \nWe’ll begin with an overview of photocatalysis\, where TiO₂ interacts with UV in daylight to produce reactive by-products that can quickly deactivate fungal and bacterial pathogens. Field research from 2025 will be highlighted\, including applications on Vidal Blanc vines that significantly reduced downy mildew severity and sporulation when applied after rain events. Attendees will also learn how this approach compares to standard organic treatments. \nThe session will also examine the role of artificial UV-C light as a standalone disease management tool across a range of crops. We’ll discuss how UV-C can be used to suppress pathogens\, and where research is heading for broader agricultural applications. \nPractical guidance will cover application methods\, including mixing and spray techniques\, timing considerations for maximum effectiveness\, and key factors such as concentration rates and potential risks of overapplication. Safety considerations\, current regulatory status\, and real-world cost comparisons will also be addressed to help growers evaluate feasibility. \nAttendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how TiO₂ and UV-C technologies work\, where they show the most promise\, and what questions remain as research continues to evolve. \nKey Topics Include: \n\nHow TiO₂ and UV light work together to control plant pathogens\n2025 research results on managing grape downy mildew\nThe role of UV-C light in crop disease suppression\nApplication timing\, methods\, and concentration considerations\nBenefits\, limitations\, and potential risks\nCost comparison with conventional and organic treatments\nSafety practices and current regulatory landscape\n\nABOUT OUR PRESENTERS… \nJennifer Brons has a Master of Science in Lighting from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and over 30 years’ experience throughout the lighting industry. Ms. Brons’ research has focused on field and laboratory studies of lighting technology\, including disinfection systems. In addition to her design and research activities\, Ms. Brons develops educational material about the effective use of light. \nDr. John D. Bullough is a Program Director at the Light and Health Research Center\, part of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. In addition to agricultural research\, he studies the effects of lighting on people and the environment in indoor and outdoor locations. John has a Ph.D. in multidisciplinary science and an M.S. in Lighting from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. \n  \nLearn more and register here!

DESCRIPTION:NYWGF Business Partner Webinar with Lindsey Zahn P.C. \nTuesday\, April 14\, 2026\n9:00 AM – 10:00 AM \n  \nClear\, well-structured contracts are essential to protecting both growers and wineries—especially in today’s challenging market environment. Yet many agreements still rely on informal terms\, leaving both parties exposed to unnecessary risk. \nThis webinar will break down what a strong grape purchase or custom crush agreement should include—and the common pitfalls to avoid. We’ll explore the differences between verbal and written contracts\, what makes an agreement enforceable\, and how unclear terms can lead to costly disputes. \nKey topics include pricing structures\, tonnage commitments\, quality specifications\, payment terms\, and penalties\, as well as how to address weather events\, crop loss\, and winery refusal clauses. We’ll also cover how to clearly define roles and responsibilities in custom crush arrangements\, including timelines\, intellectual property\, and bottling. \nParticipants will gain practical guidance on risk allocation\, working with co-ops and brokers\, dispute resolution options\, and New York-specific compliance considerations. The session will also highlight best practices for negotiating new agreements—or revisiting existing ones—to ensure they reflect current realities and protect your business. \nWhether you’re entering a new agreement or rethinking a long-standing one\, this session will help you ask the right questions—and avoid the mistakes that can cost you. \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:Managing Spotted Lanternfly in New York Vineyards with an Update on Sour Rot & Grape Berry Moth Research
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Greg Loeb will provide an update on his Spotted Lanternfly early detection research\, and his Sour Rot & Grape Berry Moth research.\nTuesday\, January 28\, 2025 · 8:30 – 9am EST \n\n\nThe invasive Spotted Lanternfly (SLF)\, originally from Asia\, is rapidly spreading across states from its initial invasion point in Pennsylvania. SLF has a strong association with the invasive Tree of Heaven (TOH)\, which serves as a preferred food source. Early detection of SLF in new areas often correlates with the presence of TOH. Join Dr. Greg Loeb as he discusses his latest research findings and how those findings are fueling a new collaboration with Dr. Sara Emery (Entomology) and Dr. Katie Gold (Plant Pathology Plant Microbe Biology) at Cornell which aims to use remote sensing to identify TOH near New York vineyards. If successful\, this could prove to be a more efficient method for mapping TOH and assessing the risk of SLF establishment. \nIn addition\, Dr. Loeb will also provide an update on his late-season damage from grape berry moth research as well as his work on sour rot. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Our Speaker Dr. Gregory Loeb:\nDr. Loeb has research and extension responsibilities for grape and small fruit crops. His research interests focus on how host plant traits and other environmental factors influence interactions between plants and their herbivores\, and herbivores and natural enemies with the specific applied goal of developing novel approaches to pest management. His more applied research program focuses on the ecology and integrated control of specific arthropod pests of grapes and small fruit crops. His extension program emphasizes educating growers on pest biology and management alternatives. He co-teaches a course on grape pest management every fall and advises graduate students and postdoctoral associates on insect ecology\, biological control and integrated pest management. \n*This webinar is free to all New York Wine & Grape Foundation Member wineries and growers.\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Long Island's Sustainable Viticulture Future: Evaluating Hybrid Wine Grapes
DESCRIPTION:Explore Long Island’s Hybrid winegrape potential: How advanced research is driving sustainable\, high-quality production in a unique climate.\nThursday\, December 5 · 9 – 9:30am EST \nJoin us as we explore the exciting potential of hybrid winegrape varieties on Long Island\, where innovative research is paving the way for sustainable\, high-quality wine production in our unique maritime climate. In 2023\, 12 hybrid winegrape varieties were evaluated at the Long Island Horticultural Research and Extension Center in Riverhead\, providing invaluable insights into their adaptability to sandy soils and the region’s specific climate challenges. \nWith vineyard establishment and management costs running high\, it is crucial to identify grape varieties that can thrive with fewer resources. Five bearing hybrids have already shown promise\, with an additional seven varieties planted in 2022 and 2023\, reflecting the New York Wine & Grape Foundation’s commitment to sustainable viticulture and climate resilience. Notably\, disease-resistant hybrids were successfully managed with significantly reduced pesticide use—an achievement that aligns with the growing demand for environmentally friendly products from both consumers and growers. \nTo demonstrate the wine quality potential of these hybrids\, fruit from select varieties was provided to local winemakers for small-lot production\, with results shared widely across the industry. This initiative is just the beginning\, as ongoing trials continue to assess resistance to diseases like downy mildew\, powdery mildew\, black rot\, and Phomopsis under varying conditions. \nAbout Our Speaker Alice Wise:\nAlice Wise is a viticulturist and educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County. She has been a pioneering force in Long Island’s wine industry since the 1990s\, specializing in vineyard management\, research\, and sustainability. Wise focuses on environmentally conscious practices and the development of hybrid winegrape varieties. Her work includes evaluating grapevine performance\, disease resistance\, and the impact of sustainable practices on wine quality. As a respected leader in the field\, she collaborates closely with local growers and winemakers\, contributing to the region’s reputation for innovative and sustainable viticulture. \n*This webinar is free to all New York Wine & Grape Foundation Member wineries and growers.\n\n\n\n\nPlease Register Here
