SUMMARY:Saving Every Drop
DESCRIPTION:The water footprint (WF) of a product is an indicator of the consumption methods affecting water resources along wine’s life cycle. Today\, there is global recognition that water scarcity is a major global challenge. As such\, the evaluation of the WF of agro-industrial products is key\, as they are widely known as having a significant footprint on water resources. The global average water footprint of grapes is 610 liter/kg. One kilogram of grapes results in 0.7 liter of wine\, so the water footprint of wine is APPROXIMATELY 870 liters of water per liter of wine. This means that one glass of wine (125 ml) costs 110 liters (according to the Water Footprint Network).   \nProducers know that grape vines have a capacity for survival and resilience to austere climates. However\, the increased production of grapes and wine\, combined with droughts and adverse effects brought on by climate change\, mean that now\, more than ever\, water needs to be used efficiently. There is an urgent need to understand where and how wine producers can improve water management in the life cycle of wine either by the reduction of water\, or the elimination of the use of water altogether.  \nThis talk will address this issue and will try to identify the major challenges producers face when using water throughout the production cycle of grapes and wine. During this conversation\, we will analyze the importance of efficient use of water. We will explore the best technologies and best practices available for the vineyard and the winery. To do this\, our international panelists will share their approaches to all three components of determining WF (water footprint): understanding the differences between green\, blue\, and grey water\, reliance on rainwater to practice dry farming and the opportunities to reuse treated wastewater.  \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Seeding the Future
DESCRIPTION:In this Climate Talk we will debate the why and the how of internalizing climate change in wine businesses: Where do you start? How does this materialize into a balance sheet? What are the fundamental changes this decision will bring into the modus operandi of the business? What barriers may one encounter? What opportunities arise from it? What are the risks? How does it affect your relationship with your stakeholders\, from employees to providers? How do you address it and communicate it? How do you pass it on to your consumers?   \nWe will seek to present practical approaches to these questions by players from the industry worldwide that have decided to address climate emergency in a proactive fashion\, committed to build a path to sustain their wine legacy for generations to come. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Restoring Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:In a multifunctional agricultural system\, that has characterized our viticulture for centuries\, biodiversity provides important ecological services that underpin vineyard health\, productivity\, quality and resilience. \nIn the last decades\, vineyard expansion and intensification are compromising the diversity and abundance of service-providing organisms\, due to landscape homogenization\, loss of key structures such as stone walls and hedgerows\, high mechanization (including frequent tilling)\, and/or overuse of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides. \nThe wine industry relies on nature\, so we need to enhance and preserve the Eco services that nature provides\, such as carbon storage\, natural control of undesirable organisms\, self-regulation and reliance on the natural balance that biodiversity provides. \nUltimately\, it needs to bring together nature\, farmers\, businesses and consumers for jointly working towards a competitively sustainable future. \nIn this Climate Talk\, the Porto Protocol Foundation and Boldly NY (The New York Grape and Wine Foundation) will zoom into various methods the wine estates of New York State use to do all of the above. We will learn how they build and enhance and sustain Biodiversity on their lands to protect their Natural capital. \nWe will explore their perspectives and perceptions on biodiversity\, the challenges they are experiencing\, the nature-based solutions and technology they have at their disposal to service and manage their ecosystem. Most importantly\, we will gain an understanding of the benefits they are achieving with their best practices. \nPLEASE NOTE: Capacity is limited to 25 seats. Please do not sign up for this event unless you are sure you can make it in person. Thank you!\nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Welcome to the Niagara Escarpment
DESCRIPTION:Building on the success of the newly updated New York Wine Reference Guide\, NYWGF is pleased to bring comprehensive\, expertly delivered New York wine education to your team each week from April 25th through June 20th\, 2023. We welcome you to join wine writer and educator Dan Belmont as he leads this nine (9) part series – completely free for NYWGF Winery and Grower Members. \nFrom our first 90-minute ‘deep dive’ into the wines of New York\, to the subsequent 60- minute sessions on our major varietals and wine regions\, this educational opportunity will be unlike any other and extremely valuable to winery and vineyard leaders\, tasting room and marketing staff\, as well as to trade\, media\, and consumers who are champions of New York wine. Tasting components are part of each session – with recommended wines for each session to be announced in advance of the seminar date. \nIN THIS SESSION: \nThis wine region derives its name from the Niagara Escarpment\, a limestone ridge that runs for over 650 miles through the Great Lakes Region. While the region has a history that includes native grapes and hybrids\, a warming climate and improved growing techniques are changing everything. The power of Lake Ontario in combination with the slope of The Niagara Escarpment—to moderate temperatures\, extend the growing season\, and protect against winter damage —is allowing more vinifera grape varieties to pop up on the landscape. And once planted\, the soil and climate conditions of our unique terroir squeeze every ounce of flavor from the fruit. This session will take you on a walk through the gravelly limestone and clay loam soil to experience the unique and varied production styles\, approaches\, terroir\, and flavors that make wines from the Niagara Escarpment so special. SUMMARY:Introduction to New York’s Native and Hybrid Wines
\nIN THIS SESSION: \nIn New York\, the native—wild grapes—were here first. Forming the backbone of the early New York wine industry\, native varieties (the majority of which are Vitis labrusca) came into use when it became apparent that European vines lacked the disease resistance and winter hardiness to survive. The term “hybrid” refers to a crossing (accidental or deliberate) between two species of grape\, most often these are North American or Asian crossed with Vitis vinifera from Europe. Most of the hybrids used in New York today were developed by French hybridizers who did the bulk of their work from 1880 to 1950. These grapes underpin much of New York wines’ unique\, local flavor – which needs to be better understood and explored. With climate change and sustainability top of mind\, the potential of these grapes is exciting. As with our other sessions\, the objective of today’s seminar will be to highlight the varying production styles\, approaches\, terroir\, and flavors that make hybrid and native grapes so special. Join us to learn more! \nTASTING:\nLakewood Vineyards Bubbly Catawba 2021 (Native – Finger Lakes)\nBully Hill Seyval Blanc (French American – Finger Lakes)\nClover Pond Marquette Reserve 2019 (U. of Minnesota – Upper Hudson)\nHunt Country Uncharted Terroir Vignoles 2020 (French American – Skin Contact – Finger Lakes) \nPlease Note: Suggested wines for tastings must be purchased separately and are not included with registration. \nClick Here to Register \nOUR HOST: DAN BELMONT\nDan is a London-based certified American Wine Expert and holds a Level-3 certification in Wines & Spirits from the WSET. DESCRIPTION:Building on the success of the newly updated New York Wine Reference Guide\, NYWGF is pleased to bring comprehensive\, expertly delivered New York wine education to your team each week from April 25th through June 20th\, 2023. Tasting components are part of each session – with recommended wines for each session to be announced in advance of the seminar date. \nIN THIS SESSION:\nSparkling wine is\, quite literally\, deeply rooted in New York State history and is produced in all the state’s major AVAs. In a February 2022 article for JancisRobinson.com\, Elaine Chukan Brown suggested that sparkling wine could be the key to shifting New York’s perception of being “value -focused” to a region producing “prestige wines.” As sparkling wine is such an integral part of our past\, it makes sense that New York winemakers look to historical methods beyond the traditional method bubbles. Production methods vary—from forced carbonation and Charmat (tank) method using native and hybrid grapes\, to traditional (Champagne) method using Chardonnay\, Pinot Noir. As with our other sessions\, the objective of today’s seminar will be to highlight the varying production styles\, approaches\, terroir\, and flavors that make New York Sparkling wines so special. Cabernet Franc is now being grown and vinified in most of New York’s major AVAs. Suited to a cool climate this grape can produce fine red wines that are light to medium bodied with vibrant acidity and firm tannins. The quality level achieved across our state’s different regions statewide has certainly established the grape as a flagship red variety. Yet it doesn’t get nearly the respect it deserves.” Fortunately\, much has changed in the last few years and information about New York wines is being sought out by all levels of consumer\, trade\, and media. This session will empower you with knowledge and introduce you to the major regions\, grapes\, and styles of New York State wine\, and provide an overview of statewide geography\, geology\, climate & history. Participants will gain conversational-level broad knowledge of New York State wine and leave excited about the upward trends in both quality winemaking and viticulture in New York State. \nTASTING:\nArrowhead Spring Chardonnay 2021 (Niagara)\nBoundary Breaks Dry Riesling 2021 (Finger Lakes)\nMazza Chautauqua Cellars Gewürztraminer 2017 (Lake Erie)\nBenmarl Winery Estate Cabernet Franc 2018 (Hudson Valley)\nMacari Merlot 2019 (Long Island)\nVesco Ridge Diamond (Champlain Valley)\nMeadowdale Winery Blue Jay Dechaunac (Upper Hudson) \nPlease Note: Suggested wines for tastings must be purchased separately and are not included with registration. \nClick Here to Register \nOUR HOST: DAN BELMONT\nDan is a London-based certified American Wine Expert and holds a Level-3 certification in Wines & Spirits from the WSET.
