SUMMARY:Winemaking on the Edge
DESCRIPTION:Crafted in New York\, but inspired from everywhere\, New York is a unique community of passionate producers who approach winemaking with a multitude of personalities and backgrounds—they’re not alike\, and they like it that way. Wine has been made in New York since the 17th century and its unique history of hybrid cultivars paired with an increasing amount of planted Vitis Vinifera has positioned the region as one of the most diverse and resilient. In New York wines you’ll find subtlety\, depth\, and nuance; it’s no surprise that they’ve found a place on the global stage\, alongside other great wine regions of the world. \nThis three-part series\, led by wine writer and educator Kelli A. White\, takes a look at New York wines side by side with other great wine regions of the world\, exploring the common threads as well as the varied approaches to viticulture and winemaking. \nEp. 3 – Winemaking on the Edge \nIn the third and final episode of this season’s New York Wines\, Online! webinar series\, New York will stand alone as one of the world’s top premier regions for cool and cold climate viticulture. From the North Fork of Long Island to the Finger Lakes and beyond and back to Brooklyn\, the Empire State is home to over 2\,000 wineries and vineyards\, a diverse range of micro-climates with one thing in common: a pioneering spirit. Host Kelli A. White will lead a lively discussion on how and why New York is boldly coming into its own\, and learning how to use its cool-climate\, unique winegrowing to craft its own distinctive style of wine. \nClick Here to Register \n\n \nKelli A. White\n\nKelli A. White is the Director of Education for the Wine Center at Meadowood in Napa Valley. Prior to that\, she worked as a sommelier\, first at New York City’s Veritas and then at PRESS in St. Helena. Between 2017 and 2019 she worked as Senior Staff Writer at the educational nonprofit GuildSomm\, where her writing won her two Roederer Awards. Her writing has also appeared in World of Fine Wine\, Robb Report\, and Vinous\, among others. On the book front\, she contributed to the most recent additions of the World Atlas of Wine and the Oxford Companion to Wine\, as well as the Academie du Vin Press works On California and On Champagne. Wine Enthusiast named her a top 40 Under 40 wine influencer in 2018. \n  \nGet that Cheddar! \nTo enhance your upcoming experience\, we are pleased to continue our partnership with Cabot Cheese. Cabot is a co-operative including more than 500 New York farm families that have been committed to making exceptional (and sustainable) cheese since 1919. This partnership will continue to showcase the best of New York’s products and producers. \nIn addition to the wine packs for trade & media\, Cabot will be shipping cheese samples\, along with information about their history\, how to enjoy and store their cheeses. Note: Cheese is meant to enhance your experience\, but is not selected to pair with the specific wines and will not be discussed during the seminar.

SUMMARY:New York State of Wine: The Elements (Water)
DESCRIPTION:There is an incredible amount of diversity in climate and growing conditions throughout New York: from Long Island\, exposed to the Atlantic Ocean\, to Hudson Valley\, the historic heartland of New York wine\, to Niagara and the Champlain Valley on the border with Canada\, to Finger Lakes\, home to 650 miles of shoreline. New York wine is synonymous with extreme climate—from the influence of water on all sides to the varied soils from retreating glaciers and sea deposits—and with over 60+ wine grape varieties grown here\, it’s no surprise this region thrives on diversity. \nThis three-part series\, led by London-based wine writer and author Jamie Goode\, celebrates the elements most integral to the wine regions of New York: Earth\, Water\, and Wine. \nEp. 2 – Water \nDid you know that New York State alone has more than 7\,600 freshwater lakes\, ponds and reservoirs? The second episode of New York: Earth\, Water & Wine will dive into one of the most influential elements to New York wine regions—Water. Join host Jamie Goode and winemakers from the Finger Lakes and Long Island\, to discuss how the proximity to water (both maritime and continental) can be a blessing … and a curse\, but ultimately\, creates distinct wine grape growing circumstances that result in the beauty and diversity of New York wines.  \nClick Here to Register \nJamie Goode\nWine Writer and Author\nJamie Goode is a London-based winewriter\, lecturer\, and judge\, He is currently wine columnist with UK national newspaper The Sunday Express in addition to contributing regularly to a range of publications including The World of Fine Wine\, Noble Rot\, Wine and Spirits in the USA\, Wine Business International\, Drinks International\, Wines and Vines and Vine Pair. He is also author of the book Wine Science\, which won the Glenfiddich Award for Drinks Book in 2006. Jamie has a PhD in plant biology and worked as a book editor before joining the world of wine with his site wineanorak.com\, now one of the leading wine websites. Cabernet Franc is now being grown and vinified in most of New York’s major AVAs. Suited to a cool climate this grape can produce fine red wines that are light to medium bodied with vibrant acidity and firm tannins. The quality level achieved across our state’s different regions statewide has certainly established the grape as a flagship red variety. As with our other sessions\, the objective of today’s seminar will be to highlight the varying styles\, approaches\, terroir\, and flavors that make New York Cabernet Franc so special. In a February 2022 article for JancisRobinson.com\, Elaine Chukan Brown suggested that sparkling wine could be the key to shifting New York’s perception of being “value -focused” to a region producing “prestige wines.” As sparkling wine is such an integral part of our past\, it makes sense that New York winemakers look to historical methods beyond the traditional method bubbles. Production methods vary—from forced carbonation and Charmat (tank) method using native and hybrid grapes\, to traditional (Champagne) method using Chardonnay\, Pinot Noir. As with our other sessions\, the objective of today’s seminar will be to highlight the varying production styles\, approaches\, terroir\, and flavors that make New York Sparkling wines so special. SUMMARY:Introduction to New York’s Native and Hybrid Wines
DESCRIPTION:Building on the success of the newly updated New York Wine Reference Guide\, NYWGF is pleased to bring comprehensive\, expertly delivered New York wine education to your team each week from April 25th through June 20th\, 2023. Tasting components are part of each session – with recommended wines for each session to be announced in advance of the seminar date. \nIN THIS SESSION: \nIn New York\, the native—wild grapes—were here first. Forming the backbone of the early New York wine industry\, native varieties (the majority of which are Vitis labrusca) came into use when it became apparent that European vines lacked the disease resistance and winter hardiness to survive. The term “hybrid” refers to a crossing (accidental or deliberate) between two species of grape\, most often these are North American or Asian crossed with Vitis vinifera from Europe. Most of the hybrids used in New York today were developed by French hybridizers who did the bulk of their work from 1880 to 1950. These grapes underpin much of New York wines’ unique\, local flavor – which needs to be better understood and explored. With climate change and sustainability top of mind\, the potential of these grapes is exciting. As with our other sessions\, the objective of today’s seminar will be to highlight the varying production styles\, approaches\, terroir\, and flavors that make hybrid and native grapes so special. SUMMARY:New York State of Wine: The Elements (Wine)
DESCRIPTION:pThere is an incredible amount of diversity in climate and growing conditions throughout New York: from Long Island\, exposed to the Atlantic Ocean\, to Hudson Valley\, the historic heartland of New York wine\, to Niagara and the Champlain Valley on the border with Canada\, to Finger Lakes\, home to 650 miles of shoreline. \nEp. 3 – Wine \nThe final episode of New York: Earth\, Water & Wine\, will narrow in on the final step: Wine. Every glass of New York wine holds something tantalizing\, something you might not expect. Pushing boundaries and challenging conventions are part of New York’s daily vernacular; to explore these motivations\, Jamie Goode will lead a winemaker panel discussion about the experimental side of New York wine. Ingenuity—and a commitment to advancing the industry—sets New York apart.
