SUMMARY:Long Island's Sustainable Viticulture Future: Evaluating Hybrid Wine Grapes
DESCRIPTION:Explore Long Island’s Hybrid winegrape potential: How advanced research is driving sustainable\, high-quality production in a unique climate.\nThursday\, December 5 · 9 – 9:30am EST \nJoin us as we explore the exciting potential of hybrid winegrape varieties on Long Island\, where innovative research is paving the way for sustainable\, high-quality wine production in our unique maritime climate. In 2023\, 12 hybrid winegrape varieties were evaluated at the Long Island Horticultural Research and Extension Center in Riverhead\, providing invaluable insights into their adaptability to sandy soils and the region’s specific climate challenges. \nWith vineyard establishment and management costs running high\, it is crucial to identify grape varieties that can thrive with fewer resources. Five bearing hybrids have already shown promise\, with an additional seven varieties planted in 2022 and 2023\, reflecting the New York Wine & Grape Foundation’s commitment to sustainable viticulture and climate resilience. Notably\, disease-resistant hybrids were successfully managed with significantly reduced pesticide use—an achievement that aligns with the growing demand for environmentally friendly products from both consumers and growers. \nTo demonstrate the wine quality potential of these hybrids\, fruit from select varieties was provided to local winemakers for small-lot production\, with results shared widely across the industry. This initiative is just the beginning\, as ongoing trials continue to assess resistance to diseases like downy mildew\, powdery mildew\, black rot\, and Phomopsis under varying conditions. \nAbout Our Speaker Alice Wise:\nAlice Wise is a viticulturist and educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County. She has been a pioneering force in Long Island’s wine industry since the 1990s\, specializing in vineyard management\, research\, and sustainability. Wise focuses on environmentally conscious practices and the development of hybrid winegrape varieties. Her work includes evaluating grapevine performance\, disease resistance\, and the impact of sustainable practices on wine quality. As a respected leader in the field\, she collaborates closely with local growers and winemakers\, contributing to the region’s reputation for innovative and sustainable viticulture. \n*This webinar is free to all New York Wine & Grape Foundation Member wineries and growers.\n\n\n\n\nPlease Register Here

SUMMARY:Managing Spotted Lanternfly in New York Vineyards with an Update on Sour Rot & Grape Berry Moth Research
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Greg Loeb will provide an update on his Spotted Lanternfly early detection research\, and his Sour Rot & Grape Berry Moth research.\nTuesday\, January 28\, 2025 · 8:30 – 9am EST \n\n\nThe invasive Spotted Lanternfly (SLF)\, originally from Asia\, is rapidly spreading across states from its initial invasion point in Pennsylvania. SLF has a strong association with the invasive Tree of Heaven (TOH)\, which serves as a preferred food source. Early detection of SLF in new areas often correlates with the presence of TOH. Join Dr. Greg Loeb as he discusses his latest research findings and how those findings are fueling a new collaboration with Dr. Sara Emery (Entomology) and Dr. Katie Gold (Plant Pathology Plant Microbe Biology) at Cornell which aims to use remote sensing to identify TOH near New York vineyards. If successful\, this could prove to be a more efficient method for mapping TOH and assessing the risk of SLF establishment. \nIn addition\, Dr. Loeb will also provide an update on his late-season damage from grape berry moth research as well as his work on sour rot. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Our Speaker Dr. Gregory Loeb:\nDr. Loeb has research and extension responsibilities for grape and small fruit crops. His research interests focus on how host plant traits and other environmental factors influence interactions between plants and their herbivores\, and herbivores and natural enemies with the specific applied goal of developing novel approaches to pest management. His more applied research program focuses on the ecology and integrated control of specific arthropod pests of grapes and small fruit crops. His extension program emphasizes educating growers on pest biology and management alternatives. He co-teaches a course on grape pest management every fall and advises graduate students and postdoctoral associates on insect ecology\, biological control and integrated pest management. \n*This webinar is free to all New York Wine & Grape Foundation Member wineries and growers.\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:NYS Ice Wine & Culinary Festival
DESCRIPTION:Taste the Best Ice Wines in New York State\nJoin us for the annual NYS Ice Wine & Culinary Festival – the largest celebration of traditional Ice Wines made in NYS. Authentic Ice Wines are a challenge to produce and are therefore rare and special. To qualify as a true ice wine\, the wines must be produced from grapes that have been frozen on the vine. The frozen grapes must be picked and pressed within hours of the first sustained freeze. Because of this labor-intensive and weather-dependent process\, very few wineries even attempt to make ice wine. New York is also one of the very few places in the world that has the climate to support traditional ice wine production\, thus producing a rich\, sweet and smooth wine. \nFill your commemorative glass with additional samples from Casa Larga and visiting NYS producers. The celebrations continue with winter activities\, vineyard rides\, an ice lounge with celebrity bartenders\, bespoke vendors for shopping\, photo opportunities and more. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, February 15\, 2025\n\n\nSession One- 11:00 am- 2:00 pm\nSession Two- 3:00 pm- 6:00 pm\n\nBuy tickets and learn more here!
