Meet the Makers with Melissa Stunden, Sommelier
It’s neighbour to the south east, the New York Wine region is the closest in growing conditions to Ontario’s own Niagara region. We share similar soil types, varietal typicity and geographical location. As a growing region, New York gained traction in the mid 1970’s and we are now seeing New York wines hit the scene in Ontario. We invite you to sample and enjoy six different wines from two of New York’s major growing regions. From the Finger Lakes to Long Island, you’ll be delighted as you experience the differences and similarities between them, and hear the stories directly from minds behind the wines that have recently made their way north to the On-Line Exclusives and Vintages at the LCBO.

About the Moderator:
Melissa Stunden, Sommelier
Melissa was part of the CAPS 1st graduating class in 2016 where she achieved her Sommelier certification with academic honours. Following her certification, she worked as the Assistant Sommelier to Jennifer Huether, MS at Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Inc. where she achieved the prestigious award of Top 30 under 30. After 6 incredible years with the team at MLSE Melissa decided to pursue a career in wine sales.
In December 2017, Melissa started her own beverage alcohol consulting company, with business partner Andrea Backstrom. They started the business after winning the contract to manage the market development of the New Zealand Wine Category across Canada. Melissa and Andrea work very closely with the trade, media, liquor boards, educational bodies such as IWEG and CAPS and host a series of different events over the course of the year to help support all things New Zealand wine.
