Benchmarking the Future of New York Vineyards
The New York Wine & Grape Foundation (NYWGF) is pleased to announce the release of the 2024 New York Vineyard Report. This report marks the beginning of a two-year initiative aimed at re-establishing benchmarks for accurate data on vineyard acreage across the state. In this effort, NYWGF has collaborated with Agency 29, Ag Access, and Deep Planet LLC to evaluate vineyard acreage through direct grower reports and advanced machine learning detection technology.

Vineyard Survey News & Updates
2024 Vineyard Survey
Grape Growers, We Need Your Help.
The New York Wine & Grape Foundation (NYWGF) is pleased to announce the first comprehensive Statewide Vineyard Survey conducted since 2011. The data you provide will facilitate strategic decision-making for both NYWGF and the private sector, as well provide benchmark figures required to compare New York State with key domestic and international wine-growing regions.
You know firsthand that the grape-growing industry is evolving.
Societal trends and environmental pressures, among other issues, are affecting what you’re growing. By participating in our comprehensive statewide Vineyard Survey, you’re also contributing to the grape crop data that growers need to make smarter decisions and compare New York State with other wine-growing regions.
Your individual responses will be kept confidential and be combined with others to form a summary report. All respondents will be provided with a copy of the results. This survey will remain open until May 1, 2024.
If you are completing the downloadable paper survey, please return it to Qlarity Access via email or mail:

“New York’s world-class wine industry deserves a level playing field, and the exclusion of the state’s grape crop from major data collection reports compiled by USDA put New York’s grape and wine industries at a distinct disadvantage. They should not be ‘flying blind’ when faced with competition from other states and existential factors like climate change and vineyard-killing invasive species. This data is vital for growers to determine everything from which grapes to grow and where to forecasting sales, formulating marketing, and identifying new growth trends to leverage.” – Senator Chuck Schumer
How the Statewide Survey Works
This project was made possible by grant funding from the Genesee Valley Regional Market Authority and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. This will be the first comprehensive Statewide Vineyard Survey conducted since the 2011 USDA NASS survey.
NYWGF is working with research partners like Agency 29, AgAcess, and Deep Planet to compile comprehensive statewide data from grape growers. We’ve sent out paper surveys to our network as well as created an online survey so that growers can participate in the most convenient method.
Frequently Asked Questions
This survey should only be completed by one representative per grower or winery.
The time it takes to complete the survey depends on your total acreage and varieties. We’ve kept it as simple as we could to keep it as quick as possible.
Please identify bearing (grapes at least two years old) acreage on:
- Land that you own
- Land that you rent from somebody else
- Land that you manage for somebody else
Do not include land that you rent to somebody else, or somebody else manages for you, or acres and production originating in another state.
Please enter the information by county and use a separate line for each variety within each county. For example, if you farm Concord grapes in Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties, please enter the acreage and tonnage of Concord for each county on two separate lines.
Please report vineyard acreage only. Do not include headlands, ponds, buildings, etc. Please do not include abandoned vineyards that were not farmed in 2023. Please report to the nearest 0.1 acre (one decimal point). If you farmed less than 0.1 acres, please do not include.
If you are unable to complete the questionnaire either online or by mailing in your response, please reach out to Gary Scheer for assistance at 314-944-2091 or via email gary.scheer@qlarityaccess.com.
When you complete the survey, either online or on paper, there is a checkbox where you can request a copy of the survey findings report. Be sure to check it off and include your email address in the contact information.
Your individual responses will be kept confidential and be combined with others to form a summary report.
