NYWGF-supported research delivers actionable insights for grape growers, winemakers, and industry leaders across New York State.
The New York Wine & Grape Foundation (NYWGF) is proud to announce the release of its 2024–2025 Research Reports, showcasing another year of cutting-edge research dedicated to advancing viticulture, enology, and wine business practices across New York State. These annual reports serve as a vital resource for growers, producers, and decision-makers navigating a rapidly evolving landscape shaped by climate change, shifting consumer preferences, pest pressures, and global competition.
Since its founding in 1985, NYWGF has made research a cornerstone of its mission, supporting projects that help New York’s wine and grape industry grow more resilient, more sustainable, and more competitive. The NYWGF’s robust Research Program – guided by industry priorities and supported through private-sector and state-matching funds – continues to foster innovation through partnerships with world-class institutions, including Cornell AgriTech in Geneva, NY, and the Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Lab in Portland, NY.
“Investing in research is one of the most important ways we can ensure the long-term health and competitiveness of New York’s wine and grape industry,” said Sam Filler, Executive Director of NYWGF. “From vineyard pest management to climate-resilient varietals to understanding consumer behavior, these projects deliver real-world solutions. That’s why NYWGF is deeply committed to sustaining and expanding our Research Program – it’s an essential foundation for our industry’s future.”
Each year, NYWGF’s Research Committee – comprised of board members, growers, and winery leaders – views submitted proposals, meets directly with researchers, and recommends project funding based on industry-identified themes. Research priorities are designed to be practical, responsive, and forward-looking, ensuring that results directly benefit those on the ground.
“As someone who sees this industry from a few different sides, I understand how vital it is to stay ahead of the challenges facing our industry today. From increasing pest and disease pressure to labor availability, rising production costs, and changing market expectations, the grape and wine industry is navigating a critical moment,” said Michael Colizzi, Chair of the NYWGF Board Research Committee. “That’s why funding viticulture and enology research through the NYWGF is more important than ever. As Chair of the Research Committee, I believe strongly that science-backed solutions are essential to helping our growers and wineries remain competitive and sustainable. Continued engagement and investment, where possible, will help ensure this work can move forward, addressing the complex needs of our industry and strengthening New York’s position as a leader in grape and wine production.”
