Nestled on the serene shores of Seneca Lake, Glenora Wine Cellars holds a distinguished place in the heart of the Finger Lakes wine region. As the first winery to establish roots on Seneca Lake in 1977, Glenora has not only witnessed the transformation of the area into a world-class wine destination but has also been a catalyst in its growth. From pioneering new grape varieties to hosting iconic community events, Glenora’s story is a blend of history, innovation, and passion.

The Winemaker’s Journey: From Global Exploration to Finger Lakes Mastery

Edward Miller, Glenora’s current head winemaker, brings a wealth of global experience to the winery’s celebrated portfolio. Born and raised in New Jersey, Edward found his way to the Finger Lakes early in his career, falling in love with the unique terroir of the region. After honing his craft at Lucas Vineyards, Edward embarked on a worldwide winemaking odyssey, traveling to California, New Zealand, Australia, and Italy. With each stop, he learned not only new techniques but also gained a profound respect for the distinct characteristics each region had to offer.

Despite his international experience, Edward always felt a deep connection to the Finger Lakes. When the opportunity arose to return to the region in 2021, this time as head winemaker at Glenora Wine Cellars, it felt like coming full circle. “The Finger Lakes always had a special place in my mind,” Edward says. “I’m still so impressed by the wines and the people here.”

For Edward, the Finger Lakes presents the perfect stage to craft world-class Rieslings and sparkling wines. He has embraced Glenora’s legacy, expanding its already strong sparkling wine program and focusing on varieties like Chardonnay and Riesling, which thrive in the region’s cool climate. His passion for innovation is evident in creations like the Seyval Blanc Pet-Nat, which highlights the potential of hybrid grapes in modern winemaking.

A Legacy of Community and Celebration

Beyond the winery’s impressive wine portfolio, Glenora is deeply rooted in the Finger Lakes community. The winery’s founder, Gene Pierce, played a pivotal role in shaping not only Glenora but the entire Finger Lakes wine industry. In the 1970s, Pierce and his partners were instrumental in the passage of the New York Farm Winery Act, a game-changing piece of legislation that allowed small wineries to sell directly to the public. This was the spark that set the Finger Lakes on the path to becoming the thriving wine region it is today.

Glenora’s commitment to community engagement shines through its events and charitable initiatives. The annual Jazz Greats concerts, held every summer, have become a beloved tradition for both locals and visitors, showcasing world-renowned musicians on a vineyard stage with breathtaking lake views. Additionally, Glenora hosts a variety of special tastings, such as its “Behind-the-Scenes Cellar Tour” and wine pairings with chocolate and macarons, offering guests unique experiences that go beyond the ordinary.

One of the most cherished community traditions is Glenora’s annual “Dosage Your Own Sparkling Wine” event. Each November, visitors join Edward and his team to craft a custom bottle of sparkling wine, learning firsthand the art of balancing sweetness and acidity in this celebrated style. For many, this event is a highlight of the year—a chance to engage with the winemakers and leave with a one-of-a-kind bottle.

Glenora also prides itself on giving back, whether through its Pasta Night charity fundraisers, support for local high school trade programs, or donations to organizations like Seneca Lake Pure Waters and Keuka College. These initiatives reflect the winery’s commitment to preserving the Finger Lakes’ natural beauty and supporting its people.

The Wines that Define Glenora

Glenora’s wine portfolio reflects both its rich history and its forward-thinking approach to winemaking. Among its flagship wines are the sparkling Brut and Blanc de Blanc, with vintages dating back to 1981—a testament to the winery’s expertise in producing world-class bubbly. Riesling, the signature grape of the Finger Lakes, is also a cornerstone of Glenora’s offerings, with their 2022 Dry Riesling garnering high praise from critics.

Other standout wines include the Seyval Blanc Pet-Nat, which showcases a modern take on hybrid grapes, and the Black Diamond, a blend of vinifera and hybrid varieties that exemplifies Glenora’s ability to push the boundaries of tradition. Dry rosé, with its delicate balance and versatility, rounds out the lineup, offering something for every palate.

A Bright Future in the Finger Lakes

With Edward Miller at the helm, Glenora Wine Cellars continues to push the envelope, blending tradition with innovation. Whether through crafting exceptional wines, fostering community connections, or hosting unforgettable events, Glenora remains a beacon in the Finger Lakes and in New York’s storied grape and wine history. The winery’s story is one of dedication—to its craft, its community, and its region.

As Glenora celebrates over 40 years of winemaking, it looks forward to an even brighter future—one where the spirit of the Finger Lakes and New York continues to thrive, both in its vineyards and in the hearts of those who call it home.
