New York Wine & Grape Foundation Releases 2024 Vineyard Report:  A New Era of Data Collection for the State’s Grape and Wine Industry

The New York Wine & Grape Foundation (NYWGF) is pleased to announce the release of the 2024 New York Vineyard Report. This report marks the beginning of a two-year initiative aimed at re-establishing benchmarks for accurate data on vineyard acreage across the state. In this effort, NYWGF has collaborated with Agency 29, Ag Access, and Deep Planet LLC to evaluate vineyard acreage through direct grower reports and advanced machine learning detection technology.

“As an industry we stand at a crossroads, understanding that accurate and timely data is not just beneficial—it’s essential,” said Sam Filler, Executive Director of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation. “Accurate data is critical for deepening our understanding of regional strengths, and consumer demands, and will help guide research funding and promotional strategies. We thank our funding partners and New York’s grape growers for investing in our future by prioritizing support for this survey process that will empower our industry to thrive in a dynamic market.”

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball said, “Agriculture is an industry that not only thrives on evolution, innovation, and adaptability, but also depends on these critical skills to drive us forward. We must keep our eyes open to what works, and examining accurate data about crop health, growth trends, and consumer demand is paramount to keeping up with our ever-changing world. I thank our partners for spearheading this initiative and look forward to seeing the insight this research brings to our industry.”

Brendan Tydings, Administrator, Genesee Valley Regional Market Authority said, “The Genesee Valley Regional Market Authority was thrilled to support this vineyard survey as organized by the New York Wine & Grape Foundation. GVRMA’s Agricultural Development program is committed to supporting the local wine and grape industry along with all local agriculture. We feel this survey will equip the industry with up to date, accurate information which will allow vineyards to be strategic as they plan for the future. We are proud to be associated with the local vineyards and we are excited to see what the future holds.”

Given the significant time elapsed since the 2011 NASS Vineyard Survey of New York, and considering the integration of advanced vineyard scanning technology into the reporting process, NYWGF’s project will be conducted over a two-year period to re-establish accurate vineyard acreage benchmarks. After this phase, regular updates will be coordinated with NYWGF’s regional marketing partners statewide.

The 2024 New York Vineyard Report provides detailed information on bearing acreage, grape varieties by AVA and region, as well as classifications by origin (vinifera, American, hybrid) and color. In 2025, the survey collection process will include utilizing Deep Planet technology to empower every grape grower in the state to easily locate, claim, and accurately define their vineyard blocks through an online portal. Additionally, the survey will expand to include pricing information, as well as data on non-bearing acreage and production tonnage.

The 2024 New York Vineyard Report was made possible through the support of the Genesee Valley Regional Market Authority and the New York State Department of Agriculture. The comprehensive information in this report reflects the invaluable contributions of our entire community, particularly the direct input from New York’s grape growers. We also extend our gratitude to our Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), which included NYWGF Board Members, viticulture professionals, and staff from Cornell Cooperative Extension.
