Building a More Sustainable Future for New York Wine
Developed by NYWGF in collaboration with industry experts, growers, and Cornell University researchers, the New York Sustainable Winegrowing Program provides vineyards with a comprehensive framework for continuous improvement. Certification is based on science-backed standards and third-party audits across more than 140 best practices in vineyard management, from soil health and energy efficiency to community stewardship and employee well-being.
Today, 79 vineyards across New York State are Certified Sustainable, and more than 30 wineries are displaying the Sustainability Trustmark on their wine labels. This Trustmark assures consumers that the grapes behind those wines were grown in vineyards meeting rigorous sustainability standards verified by independent auditors.
“Every new certification represents a shared commitment to the future of New York wine,” said Justin Jackson, Sustainability Program Manager at the New York Wine & Grape Foundation. “Our growers understand that sustainability is about more than one harvest – it’s about building resilience, protecting the land, and ensuring the long-term vitality of our industry and communities. These ten new vineyards are leading by example.”
From the Vineyard to the Bottle
The Sustainability Trustmark helps consumers identify wines made with Certified Sustainable grapes by looking for the mark on the back of participating wine bottles. It also provides transparency and confidence that each bottle reflects the principles of environmental care, social equity, and economic stability.
“Our vineyards and wineries are showing that sustainability is not an abstract goal — it’s a measurable, transparent, and community-driven practice,” said Sam Filler, Executive Director of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation. “This growing network of certified vineyards demonstrates how science, collaboration, and stewardship can come together to shape a more resilient future for New York’s wine industry.”
See Sustainability in Action
Consumers, trade professionals, and researchers can explore New York’s sustainable winegrowing community through the Interactive Map of Certified Vineyards and Wineries, available at newyorkwines.org/new-york-sustainable-winegrowing.
The map connects visitors directly to certified vineyards and wineries throughout the state’s major growing regions, making it easier than ever to plan visits, discover new producers, and support wines made with environmental integrity.
A Shared Standard of Excellence
With each new certification, the New York Sustainable Winegrowing Program continues to raise the bar for sustainability across the U.S. wine industry — showing how environmental stewardship and economic vitality can go hand in hand.
“These growers are proving that sustainability isn’t just good for the planet — it’s good for business, good for communities, and good for wine,” said Jackson. “Together, they’re building a foundation that will keep New York wine thriving for generations to come.”
