The team at the New York Wine & Grape Foundation feels it is important to start this week’s Press Deck with a note addressing recent current events.
Speaking up about social or political issues is not what we are accustomed to doing, as the organization exists to conduct promotional and research programs on behalf of the grape and wine industry in New York. That being said, no one is accustomed to living in a world like the one we are living in today. We hope that you will understand the need to add our voice to those fighting for equality and justice.
The wine and grape industry in New York was built on mutual respect for each other, our respect for the value of diversity, and respect for our world. As a part of the global community, we cannot remain silent on this issue.
Our founder Jim Trezise’s words ring truer today than they ever have before, “Diversity is our Strength. Unity is our Power.” We stand with our black friends, colleagues, and collaborators, and the entire BIPOC community in this time of crisis. We stand with those who speak out against injustice, and those who are working towards understanding, conversation, and monumental change.
What is happening around us in this moment is not normal and, coupled with COVID, it is a challenging and confusing time. We must remain respectful and supportive of each other, united as a community, and continue to work together for a just society for all. We are reminded by the South African proverb, “ Ubuntu,” which means, “I am only human through other people. My humanity is linked to yours.”
Let our industry continue to uphold principles of hospitality, which include being welcoming, friendly, genuine, and honestly valuing the experience of another human being. The Foundation is committed to honoring those principles through our work, and empowering our community to do the same.
