New York Winery Spotlight: Lakewood Vineyards

Nestled just off the southwestern shores of Seneca Lake in the heart of New York’s magnificent Finger Lakes wine country is where you’ll find Lakewood Vineyards. Once a run-down peach and apple orchard, this multi-generational, family-run winery celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2019. Today, Lakewood farms over 90 acres of vineyards and produces nearly 16,800 cases of wine from over 15 varieties of grapes. A highlight of the winery is its outdoor tasting bar which features a louvered roof and a spectacular view of Seneca Lake.

At Lakewood, the beauty of the land is reflected through its people – the Stamp family. Three generations work together to make wines that reflect the terroir of the land and to deliver an unforgettable experience for visitors at the winery. The efforts of the Stamp family have been recognized time and time again over the years with awards for their winemaking, grape growing, and overall collaboration with and contributions to the wine and grape industry in New York and beyond.

These days, since the onset of COVID-19, the folks at Lakewood have taken to the virtual airwaves to entertain and engage with wine lovers everywhere. Wine-Searcher™ recently recognized them for their efforts to provide their audience with unique virtual experiences promoting wine and takeout (benefiting local restaurants as well) and their Cook & Cork series which pits members of their staff versus one another Chopped-style. With wineries like Lakewood Vineyards in the Finger Lakes, it’s no surprise that the area has been voted America’s Best Wine Region of the Year by USA Today readers for the past two years.

Why the Rose?

In 1965, in an effort to contribute to former First Lady, “Lady Bird” Johnson’s efforts to beautify the nation’s cities and highways, early members of the Stamp family planted rows of roses along the state highway where the winery currently sits today. Upon word of the Stamp’s efforts the First Lady sent a letter thanking them for their “contribution to a more beautiful America.” The roses became a local landmark and seemed to be a natural choice for the winery’s logo. Every bottle of wine produced by Lakewood over the years has proudly displayed a rose.
